Beberapa beta-adrenergik blocking agen (yaitu, non-kardioselektif beta-blocker) merupakan kontraindikasi pada pasien dengan asma bronkial atau dengan riwayat asma bronkial, atau berat penyakit paru obstruktif kronis. Secara umum, beta-adrenergik blocking agen tidak boleh digunakan pada pasien dengan bronchospastic penyakit. Blokade Beta dapat mempengaruhi fungsi paru-paru oleh menangkal bronkodilatasi yang dihasilkan oleh katekolamin stimulasi beta-2 reseptor. Jika beta-blocker terapi yang diperlukan pada pasien ini, seorang agen dengan beta-1 selektif (misalnya, atenolol, metoprolol, betaxolol) dianggap lebih aman, tetapi harus digunakan dengan hati-hati tetap. Cardioselectivity ini tidak mutlak dan dapat hilang dengan dosis yang lebih besar.
