Selektif serotonin reuptake inhibitor (Ssri), seperti antidepresan lain, kadang-kadang dapat menyebabkan atau mengaktifkan mania atau hipomania. Dilaporkan angka kejadian berkisar dari 0,1% menjadi 2% di premarketing pengujian dari beberapa Ssri. Pasien dengan gangguan bipolar umumnya lebih besar kemungkinan untuk mengalami mania dari antidepresan. Terapi dengan Ssri harus diberikan hati-hati pada pasien dengan riwayat mania atau gangguan bipolar.
